On Thursday, Xbox Game Studios along with World’s Edge excitedly announced their latest DLC for Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition. Dubbed The Three Kingdoms, this expansion takes players on an intriguing journey through the historical Romance of the Three Kingdoms era in China.
In The Three Kingdoms, gamers can look forward to five brand new civilizations: Shu, Wei, Wu, Jurchens, and Khitans. The update doesn’t stop there, though. Expect a whole host of fresh units, including the explosive Fire Lancers, mighty Rocket Carts, and formidable Dragon Ships. Each faction will also boast its own unique units, such as Wei’s Tiger Cavalry and the Jurchens’ Grenadier.
The expansion, developed with the expertise of long-time Age of Empires partners at Forgotten Empires, promises an engaging narrative through its three campaigns. Told over 15 detailed missions, these campaigns will follow the tales of Liu Bei, Cao Cao, and the Sun Clan.
Set to drop on May 6, 2025, for Xbox consoles and Windows PC, The Three Kingdoms DLC is attractively priced at $20. And just like previous DLC offerings, a discounted rate is available for those who preorder.
Now, if you’re wondering about the PlayStation 5, you’ll be pleased to know that Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition is indeed headed there. In keeping with the trend of Xbox titles broadening their reach, the game is scheduled for release on PlayStation 5, perfectly timed with The Three Kingdoms DLC launch on May 6, 2025. For those eager to dive in sooner, the Premium Edition, which includes all past DLC, allows play starting May 1, 2025.
With these five new civilizations, the game’s appeal is set to soar, and I’m eagerly anticipating the campaign adventures that await. The synchronization with the PlayStation 5 release seems tactically sound too, likely drawing in a fresh wave of players to the game.
