Valve isn’t launching a new version of their Steam Deck just yet, but fans of their top-tier handheld gaming device have something exciting to look forward to. They’re about to release the Steam Deck OLED in a sleek white design as a limited edition.
This new “Steam Deck OLED: Limited Edition White” carries the same specifications as the current 1TB model, but it will cost a bit more at $679, which is a $30 increase. Mark your calendars because it hits the shelves next week, specifically on Monday, November 18.
In addition to coming in a striking white and gray finish, this limited edition Steam Deck will come bundled with a white carrying case and a microfiber cleaning cloth, which are nice extra touches.
Valve has dabbled in color variations before, like the smoky translucent shell released earlier, which was a hit even though it had some cosmetic cracking issues. The white edition won’t be hard to find, as it will be available in all regions where the Steam Deck is currently sold. This includes the US, Canada, the UK, Europe, Australia, and in parts of Asia like Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and South Korea thanks to their partner, Komodo. To help combat scalping, Valve is allowing just one white Steam Deck per account, and your account needs to have made at least one purchase before November 2024.
Valve’s team mentioned in a press release that they’re keen to see the market’s reaction to this new edition, and the feedback will play a role in any future color variations they might consider.
If you’re not particular about getting the official white from Valve, several other companies, such as Jsaux and dbrand, offer alternative skins and backplates that can give your Steam Deck a similar look.
Valve did provide a small glimpse into the future of their hardware plans, hinting at more color options and continuous software updates along with “ongoing work toward the future of Steam Deck.”
Personally, from the sneak peeks, I’m getting a blend of Wii U and iPod vibes, and that’s a compliment. It’ll be interesting to see if this new look will tempt current users into picking up another unit.
