Alta, the studio that brought us A Township Tale in 2021, is stirring excitement once again with their forthcoming dungeon-crawler extraction game, REAVE. The team recently unveiled more about the game’s evolving systems, and even gave fans a sneak peek into a new dungeon and enemy design—all still very much in development.
In their latest developer log, the creators gave us a tour of some newly upgraded systems and areas within the game. Among these is ‘The Fallen Bastion,’ the largest room they’ve introduced so far. According to lead environment artist Sean Ellis, “This area offers a mix of open and confined spaces, along with a blend of well-lit regions and those shrouded in darkness—perfect for setting up ambushes or evading foes.”
At the heart of this room lies a magical pedestal. Players can summon a boss battle here, with a giant spider currently playing the role of the test adversary. The studio reassures players, “Don’t worry, the spider isn’t permanent. It’s helping us nail down the mechanics of a real boss battle while we work on a more fitting opponent.”
The game world is undergoing significant transformations, with some previously revealed zones receiving “lots of changes and improvements.” Alta hints that some areas might even be replaced as development continues.
Interestingly, Alta also showcased an upgraded enemy model set to replace the temporary skeleton models. These come with varying degrees of difficulty based on their armor and weapons, promising new challenges for players.
In REAVE, the economy system involves an in-world currency called ‘Echoes’—though this might just be a placeholder name. Players gather Echoes in a vessel that gradually fills as they play. Defeating enemies releases Echoes, but they can also be discovered as players explore. These Echoes are crucial since they allow entry into loot rooms and enable players to extract from dungeons to return to the game’s social hub, where they can trade their hard-earned loot.
If you’re eager to dive into the REAVE experience early, you might want to join the game’s Discord community. They occasionally open limited slots for testers. While the official release date is still under wraps, Alta has confirmed that they are targeting the Quest 2 and above VR headsets along with PC VR.
So, keep your eyes peeled and your blades sharpened as REAVE continues to take shape in thrilling new ways.
