About a year back, I started delving into 3rd Party 64 episodes centered around the various Army Men games that hit the Nintendo 64. Coincidentally, around that time, The Video Game History Foundation shared an intriguing Christmas-themed commercial for “Army Men: Sarge’s Heroes,” one of the titles I was focusing on.
This unexpected development led to an engaging conversation with Frank Cifaldi, the director over at VGHF. He mentioned an exciting collection they’d just received from Michael Mendheim, the creative genius behind the Sarge’s Heroes series. By the time we wrapped up our chat, my inbox was brimming with documentation on the Army Men series’ development, significantly broadening the scope of my project. Fast forward to late summer 2024, and Frank extended an invitation to join him on an upcoming episode of The Video Game History Hour. This presented a fantastic opportunity to chat with Mendheim himself, delving even deeper into the nuances of his creations.
This particular episode of 3rd Party 64 includes not just snippets from that insightful interview but also rich findings from the documents VGHF graciously provided. A deep dive into these games wouldn’t have been feasible without their indispensable work.
And there’s even more to share!
During my research, I unearthed a wealth of information about “Army Men: Sarge’s Heroes,” so much so that it couldn’t all fit into the initial video. This led us to create a second video to spotlight what I believe are the nine most fascinating and previously unknown facts that emerged from this exploration.
