Doom: The Dark Ages looks set to follow in the colossal footsteps of 2020’s Doom Eternal, often hailed as one of the pinnacle achievements in first-person shooters. With Id Software giving us an extended peek during Xbox’s recent Developer_Direct, excitement is ramping up for this new medieval take on the Doom series.
Doom has never been afraid to reinvent itself, from the tension-filled atmosphere of Doom 3 to the fast-paced action of 2016’s reboot. Doom: The Dark Ages continues this trend. Set before Doom (2016), it depicts an early demon invasion. The medieval spin offers a fresh backdrop and a unique arsenal that aligns with this era. It seems this time, the Doom Slayer might be fighting alongside human soldiers, a significant shift from the usual lone-wolf narrative. While it’s unclear how this will affect gameplay, it’s certainly a change worth noting.
In Doom’s universe, the Slayer typically handles things solo. His character is famously overpowered, built exclusively to decimate demons. Other entries in the series haven’t featured allies for this very reason—it just wouldn’t make sense. Yet in Doom: The Dark Ages’ trailers, we see humans by his side, reminiscent of space marines revered by their human comrades in Warhammer 40,000. It emphasizes the Slayer’s unstoppable power.
Narratively, there’s potential here. More allies can provide a deeper understanding of the Slayer’s motives, highlighting the humanity he’s striving to save. Plus, large-scale battles with armies clashing could heighten the game’s epic feel compared to just sending one man into the fray.
However, there’s a caveat: even the most skilled ally couldn’t match the Doom Slayer’s might. As long as the game is careful not to undercut the power fantasy that defines Doom, all should be fine. Imagine being saved by an ally—that would truly undermine the franchise’s core essence.
As for Doom: The Dark Ages, it’s the latest chapter from id Software in this legendary shooter series. Due out May 15, 2025, the game promises to delve into the origins of the Doom Slayer. Set for platforms like PlayStation and Xbox, it also promises online multiplayer action, all powered by the id Tech engine. Just what Doom fans are waiting for from Bethesda Softworks.
