Disney has finally offered a sneak peek at Stitch in the upcoming live-action remake of Lilo and Stitch, and let’s just say it’s only slightly unsettling.
Just last week, we were treated to a trailer for another cherished animated film being transformed into a live-action remake—How to Train Your Dragon. Now, it’s Disney’s turn to jump on this trend. Yesterday, they dropped a 30-second teaser that mostly features Stitch playing the role of Godzilla, smashing a sandcastle that bears a striking resemblance to the famous Disney castle, along with a few other ordinary sandcastles. Aside from a brief moment at the end where a CGI Stitch appears in a void to interact with some text—specifically the release date, May 23, 2025—there’s not much else to see. It’s a pretty minimalist first glimpse!
According to the film’s official description, the storyline remains unchanged from the original. It still revolves around the bond between Lilo, a lonely young girl, and Stitch, an alien resembling a dog, who is designed for destruction. Chris Sanders is returning to provide the voice of Stitch, while Dean Fleischer Camp, known for Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, takes on the directing role.
As for the rest of the cast, newcomer Maia Kealoha will be stepping into the role of Lilo. Sydney Agudong, recognizable from On My Block, will portray her older sister Nani. Zach Galifianakis, well-known for his role in The Hangover, lends his voice to Jumba, with Billy Magnussen from Game Night as Pleakley. Also joining the cast is Hannah Waddingham from Ted Lasso, though her character hasn’t been officially announced yet. It’s a fair guess she might be playing the Grand Councilwoman.
With the film set to hit theaters in just under a year, it’s likely a full trailer will be on the horizon soon. Meanwhile, Disney is poised to rake in quite a bit this holiday season with the upcoming release of Moana 2, which premieres this week.
