In the past year, news has been relatively sparse regarding Sony’s SRH-S1, a standalone MR headset that was first announced at CES 2024. However, there’s finally some movement. The enterprise-centric device now has an official release window and a set price tag.
Developed in collaboration with Siemens, the Sony SRH-S1 is expected to hit the market in February 2025, with a price set at $4,750. This marks its clear target audience as enterprise users. You’ll be able to place orders starting January 23rd, 2025, directly through Siemens.
Initially presented as appealing to creative professionals last year, Sony and Siemens have shifted their focus. Now, they’re primarily aiming at industrial applications. The duo states that the SRH-S1 is designed to “enable the industrial metaverse,” enhancing product design and manufacturing processes with a suite of high-precision mixed reality tools offered by Siemens.
The headset is packed with some impressive specs, including a 13.6MP (3,552 × 3,840) per-eye resolution thanks to Sony’s ECX344A OLED microdisplay, along with a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chipset. Sony also touts a “proprietary rendering technology” that promises real-time 3D object rendering.
As a mixed reality device, the SRH-S1 is equipped with passthrough video capabilities, a convenient flip-up visor, and ergonomically designed controllers for intuitive 3D interaction. These controllers come in the form of a stylus-like pointer and a ring, providing a unique user experience.
Siemens, on its part, has been refining its suite of enterprise-focused Immersive Engineering tools over the past year. The aim is to empower SRH-S1 users to design 3D assets in CAD, engage with models, and conduct multi-user design reviews remotely via Siemens’ NX X platform in the cloud.
Reflecting on the progress, Bob Haubrock, senior VP of Product Engineering Software at Siemens Digital Industries Software, noted, “After showcasing the HMD at CES last year, our teams have created a set of tools that radically transform how mixed reality is utilized in engineering. They not only bolster global collaboration on high-fidelity 3D models but also facilitate co-creation on essential 3D CAD data within a managed and secure environment.”
This announcement aligns with Sony’s CES unveiling of another headset, the creatively-focused XYN, tailored for prosumers. XYN doesn’t yet have a price or a release date, and details remain sparse. It appears to be a variant of the SRH-S1, distinguishable by its black exterior compared to the SRH-S1’s grey.
