Samsung is set to make waves in the gaming world with its groundbreaking QHD 500Hz QD-OLED panel, surpassing LG’s current 480Hz offering. This move marks another leap forward in display technology by the renowned electronics giant.
In an exciting development, Samsung is gearing up to release its flagship 500Hz panel, specifically designed for top-tier gaming monitors. While high refresh rates are not entirely new, combining a 500Hz refresh rate with QHD resolution on a QD-OLED panel brings a unique edge—offering exceptionally vibrant visuals.
According to ITHome, this product is almost ready for prime time, with mass production scheduled to kick off in the forthcoming months. Currently, the only displays reaching 500Hz operate at 1080p resolution. Samsung’s innovation will pave the way for the first-ever 2560x1440p resolution with such a high refresh rate, enhanced by the richness of Quantum Dot OLED technology.
As we look to the future, Samsung plans to begin mass production of its QHD QD-OLED 500Hz panel in the first quarter of 2025, ready for distribution to monitor manufacturers soon after. The company is actively in talks with clients to roll out these new panels, aiming to outshine LG’s recent entry into the high-refresh arena—the 27-inch 480Hz OLED display, which only began mass production in August. Samsung clearly intends to reclaim the top spot within the next few months.
This new panel retains the familiar 27-inch dimension but adds a Quantum Dot layer, which promises to boost contrast and enhance HDR support, resulting in a richer viewing experience. Although specific details on pricing and availability in consumer monitors remain under wraps, convincing gamers to upgrade could prove challenging. Achieving 500 frames per second at QHD resolution isn’t yet viable with the current top-tier hardware.
While certain eSports games like CS:GO and Valorant can push close to these limits at 1080p, doing so requires an exceptionally high-end setup, such as a combination of a Ryzen 9800X3D processor with an RTX 4090 GPU. There’s a dedicated guide available for building this kind of powerhouse gaming PC, but even so, reaching 500 FPS at QHD on high to ultra settings remains unlikely with today’s technology.
