I remember playing Ys: Oath in Felghana for the first time on the PSP over a decade ago, and it left quite an impression on me. Though I’m not exactly a die-hard Ys fan, this game piqued my interest enough that I found myself revisiting the series over the years. Each installment brought its own unique experience, yet Oath in Felghana always held a special place in my heart. So, when I heard about Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana making its way to the Switch in 2025, I could hardly wait. Diving into it again reminded me of just how much the series has evolved over the 20 years since this remake of the third Ys game first debuted in Japan.
This action RPG delivers fast-paced, engaging combat as you play as the iconic protagonist, Adol Christin. Your journey through Felghana involves slicing through waves of enemies using sword combos and magical abilities. While the combat system isn’t overly complex, it is satisfying, and the frequent level-ups and weapon enhancements keep things interesting. You’ll encounter some tough challenges, but Ys Memoire introduces difficulty settings and even a high-speed “Turbo” mode to breeze through certain sections.
In addition to gameplay tweaks, this version of the game features voice acting for Adol, enhanced visuals, and various character illustrations and music options. The rock-infused original soundtrack still hits the right notes, and it’s a treat to hear old tunes from earlier versions of Ys III. Although it’s an updated remake of an older game, it doesn’t seem to show its age.
The enjoyment largely stems from how exhilarating the combat is. The battles in Oath in Felghana offer continuous excitement, especially during boss fights that push your skills to the limit without feeling unjust. While I fondly remember the story from my first time around, I found Adol and his companion Dogi’s quest less engaging this time. But the action itself keeps the momentum alive, making this 10-15 hour romp a rewarding adventure that wraps up without dragging on.
Fast forward to 2025, and while my enthusiasm has cooled a bit, I’m thrilled that Oath in Felghana is now available on a modern platform in the west. It’s easily one of the standout action RPGs from its era, and it’s just as fun to play today. While I might suggest checking out some of the newer Ys titles for a more authentic 3D experience, if you’re eager to explore the pinnacles of this legendary series, Oath in Felghana is a must-play.
