MSI has just unveiled its latest Claw gaming handhelds, and they’re causing quite a stir in the gaming community. These devices are packed with power, thanks to the Intel Core Ultra 7 258V processor paired with 32GB of RAM and an ample space of up to a 1TB PCIe Gen4 SSD. MSI highlights that upgrading should be a breeze, adding to the appeal of these handhelds. Two models have been introduced: the MSI Claw 8 AI+ and the Claw 7 AI+. They boast similar specs, with the real distinctions lying in their screen sizes and battery life, which in turn affect their overall dimensions.
When choosing between the two, it really depends on whether you want a larger screen for better immersion or something more compact and portable — either way, you’re not losing out on performance.
Let’s break down the specifications: both the Claw 8 AI+ and Claw 7 AI+ come equipped with the robust Intel Core Ultra 7 258V processor. They feature 32GB of LPDDR5x-8533 memory and offer storage up to 1TB on a PCIe Gen4 SSD, with easy access for upgrades. The graphics are handled by integrated Intel Arc 140 GPUs. On the display front, the Claw 8 AI+ boasts an 8-inch FHD+ screen, while the Claw 7 AI+ comes with a slightly smaller 7-inch FHD screen, both supporting 120Hz and 100% sRGB. Audio is delivered via dual 2W speakers offering DTS and Hi-Res Audio support.
Both models are packed with tech, featuring 6-axis IMU sensors, vibration motors, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth connectivity, and a slew of ports, including Thunderbolt 4. Power-wise, the Claw 8 AI+ packs an 80Whr battery, while the Claw 7 AI+ has a 54.5Whr capacity. And of course, they’re both running on Windows 11 Home.
MSI hasn’t disclosed the official pricing on their website yet. However, they’re already up for preorder on Amazon. The Claw 8 AI+ is listed at $899, providing 1TB of storage, while the Claw 7 AI+, a bit cheaper at $799, offers 512GB of storage. This does differ slightly from the specs MSI initially posted.
One of the standout features of these devices is their Intel processors, a rare choice since many competitors, like the ROG Ally X and Lenovo Legion Go, favor AMD chips. Beyond performance, MSI has revamped its joysticks, bumpers, D-pads, and triggers, aiming for precision and a comfortable grip. Although Tencent is working on an 11-inch device with a similar processor, it’s still under wraps and isn’t expected in the U.S. anytime soon.
The efficiency of Intel’s Lunar Lake chips shines through here, allowing gamers to prolong their playtime, all while operating at just 17W. MSI touts an impressive 113% boost in peak FPS and around a 20% increase in average FPS under the same power constraints.
These Claw AI+ models come equipped with a wealth of ports, making them not just gaming handhelds but potentially powerful mini-PCs as well. They’re armed with Copilot+ capabilities and a unique App Player that lets users install both Windows and Android games. This combination of features ensures they’re handy for both gaming marathons and more productive tasks.
