When “The First Descendant” made its debut last July, it stirred up quite the buzz. The game enjoyed a phenomenal first month, drawing in an impressive peak of over 264,000 players. However, that initial excitement seems to have waned considerably, as the game’s player base has seen a notable drop since its launch. Nonetheless, Nexon, the developer, has been diligently rolling out updates and fresh content across all platforms—at least up until June 19.
With a recent developer livestream, which was highlighted on ResetEra, Nexon announced its plans to cease support for PS4 and Xbox One come June 19, just before the game marks its first anniversary. The driving force behind this decision is the game’s expanding scale, which has made it increasingly challenging to maintain the older console versions.
For those still gaming on a PS4, this means that “The First Descendant” won’t be available after June—it’s also being pulled from the PlayStation Store. However, there’s a silver lining: any progress made on the PS4 can be carried over to a PS5. So, if you make the upgrade before June 19, you’ll be able to pick up right where you left off on the next-gen platform.
As a free-to-play, third-person looter shooter, “The First Descendant” sparked a mixed bag of reviews when it launched. On Metacritic, it’s sitting at an average score of 57 from 21 critics, and Steam users seem to share similar sentiments with a “Mixed” rating. While players seem to appreciate the grind in the beginning stages, the endgame content has drawn some criticism.
Another point of contention surrounding “The First Descendant” has been accusations that it mimicked art from Bungie’s Destiny. In light of these claims, Nexon declared they would work to ensure that any imagery resembling that of other games would distinctly represent the unique identity of “The First Descendant.”
