Microsoft has unveiled a fresh update for Windows 11, set to transform how Task Manager handles CPU usage calculations. This step brings it more in line with popular third-party tools.
In a significant upgrade, Microsoft is recognizing the limitations of Task Manager’s current performance metrics compared to third-party alternatives. To address this, an update is rolling out that’ll bring a revamped method for calculating CPU usage. With this change, Task Manager is expected to provide a much more reliable and precise snapshot of processor activity.
Microsoft commented, “We are introducing a modification to the way Task Manager calculates CPU usage on the Processes, Performance, and Users tabs. This will now use standardized metrics for CPU workload, maintaining consistency across all sections and aligning with both industry standards and third-party tools.”
Although the specifics of how CPU usage calculations will shift remain a bit unclear, what we do know is that these readings will be harmonized across all relevant sections—Processes, Performance, and Users tabs—resulting in data that’s consistent with popular third-party applications. This update could eliminate the need for external programs like HWINFO, as Task Manager takes on a more robust role, though we’ll need to wait for the update to officially roll out.
In addition to these changes, Microsoft is also introducing a new optional column in the “Details” tab titled CPU Utility. This feature offers users the flexibility to stick with the current calculation method if they prefer, supporting easier backward compatibility. The updates are currently part of the Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26120.3360, within the 24H2 release, and users can expect a staggered rollout over time. It’s encouraging to see Microsoft enhancing its tools to ensure users have the best possible experience.
