On Wednesday, Snail Games, the publisher behind Ark: Survival Evolved, unveiled a rather peculiar and poorly received trailer for its upcoming expansion, Ark: Aquatica. The Ark community was quick to express their dissatisfaction. Even the original creators, Studio Wildcard, seemed to distance themselves from this release, making it clear on social media that they aren’t involved with Ark: Aquatica.
The controversy around Ark: Aquatica largely arose due to the reveal trailer’s heavy reliance on AI-generated content. Both the visuals and the robotic voice-over, which teases “a whole new world is waiting” in the new underwater environment, felt artificial to viewers.
The trailer exemplifies the often criticized and mocked output of generative AI. Movements appear unnatural, with awkward twists and distortions of limbs. There’s an unmistakable, artificial gloss over everything, which didn’t sit well with the fans. Reactions were blunt and unreserved.
One of the community’s prominent streamers, The AxeMan, criticized the effort, stating, “You are so out of touch with your audience. DO BETTER.”
Amidst the reveal, Studio Wildcard clarified that they’re not involved with this expansion. “ARK: Aquatica is being developed by [Snail Games] Colorado, please follow them for more updates,” they posted on their X account. They went on to reassure fans of their commitment to Ark: Survival Ascended and Ark 2, while also teasing the forthcoming Ark: Lost Colony later this year.
All things considered, Snail Games likely didn’t get the reaction they were aiming for with the Ark: Aquatica reveal. The expansion, described as a “non-canonical side story to Ark,” is slated for release in June. It’s intended as a “family-friendly” entry point for newcomers, but the reliance on generative AI remains a sticking point for many in the community.
