Excitement is building as Days Gone Remastered is set to hit the PlayStation 5 on April 25. This definitive edition promises to be an absolute thrill for both new players and returning fans, packed with fresh modes, enhanced features, and technical improvements specifically tailored for the PS5 and PS5 Pro consoles. With the introduction of exhilarating new game modes—Horde Assault, Permadeath, and Speedrun—there’s plenty of action waiting for you on the PC as well through the Broken Road DLC. Whether you’re experiencing Days Gone for the first time or eager to jump back on your trusty Drifter bike, there’s a mountain of content to delve into. Don’t forget to check out our announcement blog for a deep dive into all the enhancements and new offerings.
One of the standout additions is the Horde Assault mode—a survival arcade extravaganza. Before exploring its depths, take a moment to view the gameplay trailer we’ve linked below, offering a tantalizing sneak peek into this engaging mode.
What is Horde Assault mode?
Horde Assault shifts the familiar gameplay dynamics by challenging you to endure as long as possible while amassing a high score amidst ever-growing hordes and a mix of adversaries including Breakers, Reachers, and the fearsome Rager bears. Set in a constantly evolving landscape, expect escalating threats the longer you stick around. Aimed at capturing the essence of “This World Comes For You,” this mode masterfully highlights the raw essence of the Days Gone universe. Ready for a truly never-ending showdown? It’s time to show those Freakers who’s really in charge.
Once you kick off Horde Assault, you’ll land in Cascade, armed with just a sidearm to set you on an uphill battle against the initial wave of Freakers. Make it to your Drifter bike, your indispensable ally in traversing this vast, open region. Scattered across the map are Supply Boxes waiting to arm you with powerful weapons, critical for upping your survival odds. With over 20 weapons, including a flamethrower new to the series, each Supply Box could mean the difference between life and death against the ever-advancing hordes. The catch? The items in each box are randomized, resetting with each start.
Fight tooth and nail for survival by restocking resources and gaining extra XP through side jobs—these small objectives could be the key to lasting longer. Imagine the chaos of being low on ammo while a daunting horde of 800 Freakers is hot on your trail. If you’re skilled enough, reaching 30 minutes of survival time will pit you against the fearsome Ultimate Horde—a relentless wave of enemies that refuses to quit. But rather than spilling all the beans, we’ll let you uncover the rest for yourself.
Survive
As you progress, earning in-game rewards like exclusive character skins, fresh patch cosmetics, and unique Injectors can significantly alter your gameplay. Days Gone veterans will recognize the familiar impact of Injectors but can now experience them with enhanced modifiers, adding a twist this time around. Achieving ‘Legendary Survivor’ status will let you access all 24 varieties of Injectors—half providing scores boosts with added difficulty, the other half offering easier gameplay with score penalties.
While we won’t spoil all the surprises, a couple of Injectors worth mentioning are "Exploding Freakers," causing Freakers to explode upon death, and "Wanted," which cranks up the challenge by setting your heat level to max right from the start. It’s a true test of strength and strategy.
As you play through Horde Assault, you’ll climb through 35 progressive Reward levels, each bringing more Injectors, character skins, and cosmetics. Moreover, six new characters, previously unplayable, can now join the fray, including familiar faces like O’Brian, Lisa, and the fan-favorite Skizzo. And as many might recall from our 2019 challenges, patches make their return, this time purely for show on Deacon’s gear. With the Enhanced Photo Mode, strut your latest patches with pride. Beyond the Reward path, there are extra goodies in the Reputation Phase for those who achieve target scores across all four regions. Spoilers are no fun, but one much-requested reward involves something special related to your bike.
While Horde Assault serves as an endgame feature, it’s accessible right off the bat when you boot up Days Gone Remastered. While beginners might want to get acquainted with the core mechanics via the story mode first, there’s nothing stopping you from jumping headfirst into this relentless, fun-packed new experience. Horde Assault offers an additional 10 hours of gameplay, adding yet another layer to an already content-rich world, ensuring you’re glued to every moment of your journey through Days Gone.
