Fresh details about Dune Awakening are buzzing online, thanks to an update from Funcom that outlines their post-launch plans for the game. Plus, if you’re curious about what kind of rig you’ll need to run it, the PC specs have been officially posted on the game’s Steam store page.
In a brief but informative video, Joel Byros, the Chief Creative Officer, outlines what players can expect once the game is officially out on May 20. One standout announcement is that Dune Awakening will forego typical MMO subscription fees. Instead, Funcom plans to support the game with optional, paid DLC packs alongside free content updates.
These no-cost updates promise to bring new features, improvements, and story content—pretty much all the elements that keep a live-service game vibrant. The optional DLCs haven’t been detailed yet, but they can be bought individually or bundled in a season pass, providing a batch of new content at once.
Byros also let slip that an early play option is on the table for some versions of the game. If you’re eager, you can dive into Dune Awakening as early as May 15. This early-bird access aims to help balance server loads, smoothing out potential launch-day hiccups—crucial for a seamless MMO debut.
Alongside the video, the Steam post shares a detailed look at the minimum and recommended PC specs:

So, what do you think about this business model? With the avalanche of subscriptions we all juggle, a game that doesn’t require one feels like a breath of fresh air. It echoes why I occasionally return to Guild Wars 2—no strings attached! Also, keep an eye out for more updates, as a gameplay stream is slated for March 24, per a hint at the end of the Steam blog post.
