Dive into Dead by Daylight’s latest chapter, "Doomed Course," where a thrilling new Killer, The Houndmaster, and a riveting Survivor, Taurie Cain, make their debut. This update doesn’t just bring fresh faces—it delves deeper into the eerie lore of Dead by Daylight, offering more insight into the connections between our world and the ominous Realms of The Entity.
Let’s explore the gripping backgrounds of these two characters, with Portia Maye emerging as one of the deadliest Killers and Taurie displaying a moral complexity that sets her apart in The Fog.
Merciless As The Sea
Portia Maye was on track for an ordinary life until fate had other plans. Her childhood was filled with adventures at sea, thanks in large part to her beloved father’s influence. However, tragedy struck when the infamous pirate, Mad Molak, attacked their ship, Nightsdream, leaving almost everyone dead.
Portia survived by becoming a celestial navigator but soon succumbed to the dark pull of vengeance. She ultimately steered the ship into the treacherous Dragon’s Tooth, taking her enemies down with her. Emerging as the lone survivor, save for the discovery of her loyal puppy, Snug, Portia’s life took a drastic turn.
Once a quintessential survivor of tragic events, Portia spent years on the dreaded Dragon’s Tooth, with vengeance consuming her thoughts. Unbeknownst to her, Dragon’s Tooth was a Bleed—a mysterious point where different dimensions intersect.
"As you enter a Bleed, surviving is one thing; keeping your sanity is another," says Jessi Thind, the Lead Narrative Director of Dead by Daylight.
Her descent into madness transformed her into a ruthless Killer, even surpassing Molak as she enacted her revenge. Her transition into The Entity’s realm was further solidified by her bond with Snug, who embodies part of her ferocious nature in gameplay, assisting in hunting down Survivors.
For The Black Talon
Growing up within the secretive Black Talon organization, a branch of the infamous Black Vale, Taurie Cain was driven by the ambition to unveil The Entity’s secrets. She joined her parents on an exploration of a Bleed, a fateful venture that nearly ended in tragedy but shaped her future.
From then on, Taurie was dedicated to the malevolent cause, quickly rising in the ranks with a belief that aligning with The Entity was a path to transcend humanity’s limits. Some Survivors like Haddie Kaur and Elodie Rakoto have crossed paths with the Black Vale, but Taurie actively sought out the darkness.
“She actually believes she’s working for humanity’s good,” explains Thind. “But as her status grew, so did the darkness surrounding her. She eventually faced a pivotal moral choice.”
This came to a head when she was ordered to kill Jordan Rois, Haddie Kaur’s stepbrother and a persistent adversary of the Black Talons. Yet, at the crucial moment, Taurie hesitated—a decision that preceded her arrival in The Fog.
In her new reality, Taurie learned that her life’s work only perpetuated suffering, but she remains steadfast in her purpose, believing there is a greater plan for her.
“Taurie’s faith in her destiny might serve her well in The Fog,” adds Thind. “She believes she’ll eventually be recognized as a Killer by The Entity.”
It’s intriguing to ponder why The Entity chose her as a Survivor instead.
“Emotion is a resource for The Entity,” Thind notes. “It likely sees value in Taurie’s inner conflict and alienation from the others around her.”
Despite the tensions, Taurie is committed to surviving and thriving. Her unique abilities focus on distancing herself from teammates and deftly drawing the Killer’s attention, resilient against all odds.
It’s fascinating that both Portia and Taurie have survived encounters with the Bleeds, with vastly different outcomes. While their destinies might have been interchangeable, their paths are firmly set, leading them deep into the unpredictable landscape of The Fog.
