Bungie’s ‘Marathon’ Set for September Release on Xbox; Closed Alpha Launching This Month

Bungie has unveiled an exciting peek into their forthcoming extraction shooter, Marathon. Today, they offered a genuine glimpse at what players can expect from the game’s action. Slated for release on the Xbox Series X and Series S, you can mark your calendars for September 23rd, 2025.

In Marathon, players take on the role of Runners—cybernetic mercenaries equipped with unique abilities. Teaming up with as many as two other players, you’ll face off against hostile AI security forces and rival Runner teams. As you navigate this challenging environment, you’ll gather weapons, implants, and other gear. Successfully completing a run means you get to keep your spoils for future ventures.

Here’s how it breaks down: you and your team of up to three players are deployed into a zone with a straightforward objective—loot as much as you possibly can and make it out alive. The threats are numerous, ranging from AI security personnel to other competitive teams. If you manage to survive, everything you’ve gathered is yours to retain for future escapades. There’s even an option for the particularly brave to fly solo, taking on entire teams alone and extracting with all the loot yourself.
