Monster Hunter Wilds has been captivating my attention ever since it launched a few weeks ago. I’ve been diving deep into the high-rank environments, trying to climb the hunter ranks as I debate which new armor set to craft next. My current focus is on taking down the gnarly Jin Dahaad, but I have to admit, the rugged Gravios armor might just win me over with its perfect compatibility for my hammer build. There’s certainly a lot to keep a hunter busy in Wilds, but I can’t shake the feeling that something’s missing.
To be precise, I wish I could dress up a pig in outfits and carry it around like a cherished baby. I’m referring to the beloved Poogie from Monster Hunter, that rotund, floppy-eared pig who’s become almost as iconic as the series’ fierce Rathalos. Poogie has been a staple in Monster Hunter for ages; my first encounter was back in the hub world of Monster Hunter World. There’s a fun little ritual involved—petting Poogie to a catchy tune while showering the little guy with affection. Get the timing right, and Poogie is thrilled! But remember, this is a Monster Hunter game, so even petting isn’t always straightforward. Mistime it, and the stubborn pig will scamper away until your next quest is complete.
In earlier Monster Hunter games, having Poogie nearby in the main gathering spots added a touch of luck, supposedly increasing your chances of snagging those rare monster parts. Some players swear it’s written into the game’s code, though there’s no solid proof. But Poogie isn’t just a good luck charm! In past versions, once Poogie trusted you, you could dress him in hilarious outfits, like a cute bee costume. In Monster Hunter World, I’d carry him around the hub, feeling for that telltale controller vibration that signaled hidden treasure nearby. (If you want to see it in action, TagBackTV has an excellent video showcasing the process.)
Although there’s a Poogie in Monster Hunter Wilds, you won’t find him until chapter 3, tucked away in a village that rarely calls for a visit unless you have particular quests to tackle. This Poogie sports a spherical frog on its back—a charming sight, no doubt—but the level of interaction doesn’t quite measure up to previous games. And sadly, there are no stripy pajamas or cozy wooly costumes in sight. All I can do is pet him and maybe change his name.
With the announcement of Monster Hunter Wilds’ Title 1 update next week, Capcom has hinted at a more enriching gathering hub to serve as an alternative to the scattered campsites throughout the Forbidden Lands. The 12-minute update video from Capcom revealed small glimpses of the hunter’s new Grand Hub, promising games and an expanded kitchen, possibly heralding the return of the delightful Meowscular Chef.
However, for the hub to truly feel complete to me, it needs one crucial element: a Poogie I can scoop up and hold. Capcom, I’m counting on you to make this happen—give us Poogie fans what we’re yearning for!
