Warner Bros. Games has recently decided to cancel a previously unannounced expansion for Hogwarts Legacy, which had been rumored to launch sometime in 2025. This decision comes amid the company’s ongoing financial challenges, which have affected multiple projects and studios. Hogwarts Legacy, the acclaimed action-RPG that took the gaming world by storm upon its release in 2023, was expected to expand the Wizarding World franchise further. However, lukewarm receptions to other related releases, like Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions and the disappointing performances of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and MultiVersus, have led to reconsiderations.
Back in March 2025, Bloomberg reported that the leadership at Warner Bros.-Discovery decided to shelve the Hogwarts Legacy DLC as part of “ongoing restructuring” efforts at Avalanche Software. The primary reason was that the expansion did not seem “substantial enough” to justify the planned price. Alongside, plans for a “Definitive Edition” of Hogwarts Legacy, which was supposed to include the base game and the rumored DLC, were also abandoned. Notably, the scrapped DLC was being co-developed with Rocksteady Studios and aimed to reintegrate some of the content cut from the base game, such as a storyline involving a significant companion. On a positive note, fans can take solace in the fact that a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy is actively in development.
This latest move by Warner Bros. Games highlights their recent cost-cutting strategies. Earlier in February 2025, the company canceled a much-anticipated Wonder Woman title and shut down three studios, including the creators of Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, Monolith Productions. Furthermore, layoffs reportedly hit Rocksteady Studios after the underwhelming performance of its live-service game, Suicide Squad. The turbulence within the Warner Bros. games division has even reached the top echelons, with plans to negotiate the departure of its president, David Haddad, later this year.
Although the postponement of Hogwarts Legacy’s additional content is disappointing for fans, there’s hope that the upcoming sequel will remain unaffected. Warner Bros. Games has emphasized the significance of the fantasy-themed IP in their future strategic plans, showing confidence that the ongoing development of the anticipated Hogwarts Legacy sequel won’t face similar setbacks.
