The team behind Gorilla Tag, Another Axiom, recently shared some exciting news about their latest title, Orion Drift. Just a month into its early access phase, the game is already seeing its first major update. This update brings with it ‘Capture the Beacon’ (CTB), a new mini-game that promises to add more depth to the sprawling space station setting.
CTB draws inspiration from the classic capture the flag concept. Here, players strive to move a beacon back to their team’s base. What makes CTB in Orion Drift unique is the absence of player restrictions and time limits. This means anyone can dive into the action whenever they choose, keeping the gameplay fresh and dynamic.
Though ‘Capture the Beacon’ is the update’s highlight, the developers hinted at more goodies in store, though they remain tight-lipped on specifics. We’re eagerly waiting for the full reveal, which coincides with the release set for tomorrow at 10 AM PT.
Orion Drift hit the shelves on Quest for free in late February, offering a unique experience rooted in Gorilla Tag’s movement system. Players navigate the vast space station by physically mimicking arm movements, which propels them forward in the game.
Aside from CTB, Orion Drift already boasts a wide array of activities. Its flagship game, ‘Drift Ball’, is a nod to the now-retired Echo VR, offering a gameplay experience akin to handball, but in a low-gravity environment. Spread across the station’s districts, you’ll find Gorilla Tag-style parkour sections for climbing enthusiasts, training arenas for honing Drift Ball skills, along with golf, basketball mini-games, and lounges for spectating matches in various arenas.
Currently, servers support up to 75 players, but there’s ambition to eventually host as many as 200. Expanding the mini-game roster is seen as a vital step towards reaching this goal, even though Orion Drift is still in its infancy.
Despite following in Gorilla Tag’s footsteps with engaging social drop-in games, Orion Drift hasn’t yet achieved the same viral fame. As of now, it has garnered about 3,300 user reviews. It hasn’t broken into the top 50 Quest games either, where titles like Animal Company, Yeeps, and Gorilla Tag lead the pack. But with continued updates and community support, its potential is evident. The future looks bright for Orion Drift.
