Pixelity, a game development studio based in Korea, has announced they’re working on an exciting XR game inspired by the legendary ’90s anime, Neon Genesis Evangelion. This project is particularly thrilling for fans of the series, considering its impact on anime culture.
According to a blog post from Pixelity, they’ve secured an official licensing agreement with Studio Khara in Japan, paving the way for this ambitious endeavor. The game is set to be a three-part series, each part drawing from the iconic anime’s complete 26-episode storyline. The first installment is already in the works, with a release targeted for 2026.
For those deeply familiar with Evangelion, there’s no need for much introduction. This anime took Japan by storm in the ’90s, not only rejuvenating the anime industry but also leaving a lasting mark as a cultural phenomenon.
The storyline is set in the futuristic year of 2015, and it revolves around a young pilot, Shinji Ikari. Tasked with operating the giant humanoid combat machine known as Evangelion, Shinji stands as humanity’s hope against mysterious beings called Angels that threaten the advanced city of Tokyo-3.
While Pixelity has yet to confirm which platforms the game will be available on, they promise an immersive XR adventure where players can traverse different locations and relive the series’ narrative and action-packed sequences. The gameplay involves undertaking missions and engaging in exciting battles.
A standout feature, as shared by the studio, is the collaborative gameplay allowing players to interact with beloved characters from the Evangelion saga. This aspect is sure to captivate long-time fans. Pixelity is focused on delivering an adrenaline-fueled experience that fits well within the action-adventure genre.
Established in 2017, Pixelity has been a creative force in VR gaming, with titles like Puttzzle (2023), Crazyworld VR (2022), and Rise of the Fallen (2018) to their credit. Alongside the Evangelion project, they are also developing two other VR games: The Patcher and Teahouse of Souls.
It’s worth noting that while Evangelion has ventured into VR before, this marks the first time an official home-based game is being made for the franchise. Back in 2017, Bandai Namco’s VR studio, ‘Project i Can,’ introduced Evangelion VR: The Throne of Souls, a game that was briefly available at VR ZONE in Shinjuku, Japan. Now, this new XR game from Pixelity promises to bring the experience to a wider audience at home.
