And just like that, my streak of never having to spend actual money on Nintendo Switch Online has come to an end.
One of the much-loved features of the Switch is wrapping up shortly after the re-release of Xenoblade Chronicles X, and another feature won’t be making its way to the Switch 2.
In an announcement tonight, Nintendo revealed that the My Nintendo Gold program will cease operations starting March 25 at 12:59 a.m. ET. This program allowed players to earn 1% in eShop credit on 1st party physical releases during their first year, and a 5% reward for all eShop purchases, seamlessly collecting these rewards. The exception to this discontinuation will be physical games released between March 25, 2024, and their one-year expiration. This means titles like Endless Ocean: Luminous and Xenoblade Chronicles X Definitive Edition will still qualify, but others, such as Pokemon Legends: Z-A and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, will not.
Additionally, Nintendo’s updated support page indicates that Switch Online Vouchers won’t be applicable for Switch 2 games. Previously, Switch Online subscribers could grab these vouchers in pairs for $99 US or the local equivalent, which could then be redeemed for first-party releases. These vouchers will still be usable for future titles on the original Switch platform, covering games like Legends Z-A and Prime 4.
