The holiday season proved to be a surprising windfall for PSVR 2, as the headset experienced an unexpected surge in sales on Amazon US, outperforming last year’s figures by nearly five times. This uptick was largely driven by an aggressive sales strategy during Black Friday and the subsequent holiday period, where a significant 42% discount was offered on the Horizon bundle, slicing the price down from $550 to a mere $350.
As anticipated, this hefty price cut spurred a substantial increase in the headset’s sales volume. However, the extent of the boom exceeded expectations, with PSVR 2 achieving almost five times the peak sales volume during the 2024 holiday season compared to 2023.
Now, it’s essential to keep in mind that during the 2023 holiday season, the headset didn’t see significant promotional activity. Common sense might suggest that slashing a product’s price by almost half would naturally boost sales by around 50%. Yet, the PSVR 2’s price flexibility seems to play out differently, showcasing a much more dynamic relationship between cost and consumer demand.
Interestingly, Sony didn’t just limit the discount to the Black Friday window; the sale commenced ahead of time and extended well into the new year. This extended sale period hinted that Sony might have been looking to clear out stock, possibly in anticipation of a new SKU or a refreshed model lineup. While some have speculated that Sony could be losing confidence in the PSVR 2’s market potential and attempting a clearance move before discontinuation, it seems more plausible that the company will continue to support the headset at least until the next console generation arrives, even if it doesn’t remain a focal point in their strategy.
