Get ready for some exciting news from the gaming world! Two iconic real-time strategy games, Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition and Age of Mythology: Retold, are making their way to the PlayStation 5. Xbox made this announcement recently, indicating that Age of Empires will land this coming spring, while Age of Mythology will follow in March 2025.
Fans of these franchises can look forward to seamless cross-play among Xbox, Windows PC, and PlayStation 5, ensuring everyone can join in the fun regardless of their platform of choice. Excitingly, Age of Mythology: Retold players on PlayStation will have access to the new expansion, Immortal Pillars, which introduces an innovative take on the Chinese faction.
The development of these beloved titles is spearheaded by World’s Edge, a studio under Xbox Game Studios. They’re known for breathing new life into classic games while also venturing into new territories within the franchise. Over recent years, they’ve rolled out Definitive Editions for Age of Empires, Age of Empires 2, and Age of Empires 3, not to mention creating Age of Empires 4 and ambitiously remaking Age of Mythology.
When I first reviewed Age of Mythology: Retold, I mentioned that it not only succeeds as a stellar remake but also paves the way for future expansions and updates. I can’t wait to dive back into it for countless more hours and am eagerly anticipating the new Pantheons on the horizon.
In a broader trend, Xbox games are increasingly finding homes on other platforms. In line with this strategy, Playground Games’ Forza Horizon 5 is also set to arrive on the PlayStation 5 this spring, and a new title by Bethesda Softworks and MachineGames, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, is scheduled for release in the first half of this year on the same console.
Under the leadership of Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer, Xbox is on a mission to broaden its reach by bringing its lineup to both PlayStation and Nintendo fans, focusing on maximizing profits. Many upcoming Xbox first-party releases will hit PlayStation 5 from day one, including id Software’s DOOM: The Dark Ages and Xbox Game Studios Publishing’s Ninja Gaiden 4. Spencer has also emphasized the importance of continuing hardware innovation to convince players to choose Xbox over other consoles.
Keep an eye out for all the latest on these exciting developments as Xbox continues to expand its gaming universe!
