Last year, fans of Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) received thrilling news: Wizards of the Coast teamed up with Resolution Games to bring the beloved tabletop role-playing game into the realm of virtual reality.
Up until this week, we were mostly in the dark about what to expect from this new venture. But on Wednesday, both companies finally lifted the veil, revealing the game’s official title and more intriguing details, moving us all closer to stepping into a VR D&D world.
Get ready for Battlemarked, the new game that’s built on Resolution Games’ Demeo system. True to its roots, Battlemarked offers a virtual tabletop landscape filled with turn-based combat, reminiscent of classic D&D mechanics. It also features an action point system revolving around the use of playing cards.
This marks the first collaboration between Resolution Games and Wizards of the Coast, promising a more authentic D&D feel than what’s experienced in Demeo. However, unlike traditional D&D, Battlemarked doesn’t require a Dungeon Master. The game encourages players to dive deep into strategy and decision-making, pushing roleplaying slightly to the side.
At launch, Battlemarked is set to offer two story-driven campaigns, designed for up to four players to explore together.
Though specific platforms weren’t definitively announced, Battlemarked will be accessible on VR, PC, and consoles. Given that Demeo supports devices like Meta Quest, Pico, SteamVR, PlayStation VR2, PlayStation 5, PC, Mac, and iPad, it’s quite likely that Battlemarked will be playable on these too.
The excitement continued with a newly released trailer. It showcases the familiar art style from Wizards of the Coast we all adore, along with a preview of some of the classes and races, like a fighter Dragonborn and a rogue Tiefling, among others.
Details about the game’s launch date and pricing are still under wraps, as are specifics of its campaigns. Resolution Games has hinted at plans for expanding with more campaigns set in various “D&D settings” down the line, but they remained tight-lipped when pressed for more information.
Resolution Games, hailing from Stockholm, Sweden, boasts a decade of experience in the gaming world. Their portfolio includes games like Angry Birds: Isle of Pigs, Cook-Out: A Sandwich Tale, and Spatial Ops. With around $38.6 million raised, according to PitchBook, they’re a key player in the industry.
This latest announcement underscores D&D’s rise as a cultural powerhouse, transforming into a vast multimedia franchise. From acclaimed web series like Critical Role and Dimension 20 to video games like Baldur’s Gate 3, and even action-packed films like “Honor Among Thieves,” D&D continues to captivate audiences worldwide.
