Square Enix has revealed that Nier: Automata has surpassed nine million sales worldwide. Ever since its debut in early 2017, the game has continued to capture the hearts of gamers and critics alike, thanks to its immersive world, intriguing characters, and memorable soundtrack.

As a sequel to the 2010 game Nier and an offshoot of the Drakengard series, Nier: Automata earned widespread acclaim upon release, selling over 1.5 million copies in just the first two months. The action RPG picked up numerous awards by year’s end, especially recognized for its outstanding soundtrack and innovative game design. Even years later, its influence is noticeable within the gaming arena, as seen in recent crossovers like the one with Stellar Blade. Sales of the game have shown no signs of slowing down, according to the publisher’s latest updates.

Recently, the announcement came that Nier: Automata has shipped over nine million units, combining both physical and digital copies. This statistic reveals that in just the last 10 months, another million units were sold. Clearly, the game’s allure remains strong, with a new anime series launched in January 2023 and a quirky dinner show inspired by the game held in Tokyo at the end of December.

The potential for future Nier titles has captured the fans’ imaginations, especially since director Yoko Taro hinted at a new project in May 2024. This speculation was only heightened by news of key personnel changes at PlatinumGames, leaving many questioning what the future holds. After the April 2024 release of Stellar Blade, Yoko Taro expressed high praise in a conversation with IGN Japan, stating that the game exceeds Nier: Automata in terms of visuals and general appeal. Despite Taro’s kind words, Stellar Blade’s director, Kim Hyung Tae, humbly commented that his creation “couldn’t compete.” While Nier fans await potential news of a sequel, Taro’s other works, such as his recent Voice of Cards trilogy, demonstrate his flair for exploring diverse narratives and creative avenues.
