Some Nintendo enthusiasts are crossing their fingers for the return of Miiverse on the upcoming Switch 2 console. While Nintendo hasn’t unveiled the Switch 2 officially yet, its announcement seems to be on the horizon. Speculation is rife that Nintendo could showcase the Switch 2 in the next few months, meaning fans might not have to wait too long to catch a glimpse of the new console.
For those unfamiliar, Miiverse was a distinctive social platform that graced the 3DS and Wii U. It allowed players to share notes, interact with Mii avatars, and engage in a host of social activities. Some games even integrated Miiverse features into their gameplay, letting players exchange items and enjoy additional perks. Despite its popularity, Miiverse was discontinued in 2017, not far into the lifespan of the original Nintendo Switch.
Its discontinuation left some gamers nostalgic, and now there’s a budding desire for its return with the Switch 2. Official details on the Switch 2’s features are still under wraps, making the revival of Miiverse seem unlikely. However, if there’s substantial fan interest, Nintendo might just consider revisiting this social feature.
Though the curtain has yet to rise on the Switch 2, there are tidbits of information that have been confirmed. For instance, the Switch 2 will support backward compatibility with the original Switch, and for the first time, Nintendo accounts will transition to the new system. This continuity, however, doesn’t promise the return of Miiverse, as it was never part of the Switch Online offerings.
The upcoming Switch Online service will probably mirror what’s currently available on the original Switch, but there’s always room for enhancements. Conceivably, these upgrades could introduce a new social networking component reminiscent of Miiverse, though perhaps not identical to what Wii U users experienced.
Recent whispers suggest Nintendo might reveal the Switch 2 at an event on January 8. Whether or not these rumors bear fruit, we might soon get answers about the console’s online features. Until then, fans will have to sit tight and hope for the best.
