In the past week, we’ve seen several convincing leaks about the Nintendo Switch 2’s final design. The most notable development happened yesterday when Dbrand unexpectedly unveiled a comprehensive 3D render of the Nintendo Switch 2, paired with a modified version of their Killswitch carrying case, tailored for handheld PCs but now adapted for the Switch 2. During a conversation with The Verge, Adam Ijaz, the CEO of Dbrand, mentioned that the company had access to the real dimensions of the Switch 2. These measurements were obtained from a 3D scan of actual hardware, revealing it to be about 270mm wide with Joy-Cons attached (200mm without), 116mm tall, and 14mm thick.
The Nintendo Switch 2, as we see it now, boasts a remarkable design transition. It features a substantial 8-inch screen, a significant upgrade from the Switch OLED’s 7.2-inch and the original Switch’s 6.2-inch displays. Additionally, it introduces an extra “C” (capture?) button on the right Joy-Con. The Joy-Con controllers are magnetically detachable, with a more curved design. The device also includes both top and bottom USB-C ports and a wide U-shaped kickstand similar to the one found on the Switch OLED.
With the launch anticipated in the first quarter of 2025, it’s evident that the Switch 2 is a step forward from the Switch OLED, despite it reportedly not using an OLED panel. Instead, leaks suggest it will feature an 8-inch 1080p IPS LCD, which we hope will surpass the quality of the current Switch LCD.
When it comes to Dbrand’s new Killswitch case for the Switch 2, the usual features like an upgraded kickstand or full-body coverage aren’t present. This change accommodates the detachable Joy-Cons, so the case splits into separate parts rather cleverly and now uses a stylish teal bungee cord to hold everything together. With Dbrand’s reputation for crafting reliable protective cases, it’s likely that their final product will be well-received.
We know many are eager for an unaltered glimpse of the Nintendo Switch 2. While we’re not quite there yet, the details shared by Dbrand align well with a 3D-printed model received by the YouTube channel SwitchUp earlier this week. This should offer some insight into how the actual console will look and feel.
Overall, this profound leak from Dbrand, who doesn’t seem to be under a non-disclosure agreement, suggests that an announcement and release date for the Nintendo Switch 2 is imminent. Previous statements hinted at a release before the end of 2024, and Nintendo has declared a deadline of March 2025 for revealing Switch 2 details. With that date fast approaching, companies like Dbrand are already gearing up for the excitement surrounding Nintendo’s next major handheld hybrid console.
